How to Practice Self-Care for Care Partners

Alzheimer disease is a form of dementia that is fairly common today. If you’re caring for your loved one, you must make self-care a high priority. Spending quality time with a loved one with dementia can be physically and emotionally draining. Eating right, and or exercising is not what you’re focused on. Instead, it’s more like you go to sweet and fried food, sweet & alcoholic beverages and binging on TV.

Here are a few simple tips for care partners to practice self-care:

  1. Know your limits and observe them.
It’s ok to say no to activities that may zap your energy or exhaust your physical limitations. As a care partner, get accustomed to the unexpected and prepare yourself by knowing your boundaries.

  2. Ask for support.
You don’t have to go through this alone. There are support groups and agencies available to support you. Also, remember to involve those important to you. They care for you and want to do what they can to assist you.

  3. Be kind to yourself.
Being a care partner requires more from you than you ever imagined. Don’t try to take on too much and give yourself the space and time to do things that support you.
